Ten Natural Products to Lower Cholesterol

Sometimes in the battle against high cholesterol it is easy to look past the obvious and affordable, in favor or prescription medications. This could be a mistake! Many of the natural products to lower cholesterol listed in this article you have probably walked by hundreds of times in your local grocery store, as you were thinking about how to squeeze in your 30 minute workout, or worrying about how to get your blood lipid profile back in balance. If it is any consolation I have done the same thing on numerous occasions. In this article we will briefly touch on ten natural products to lower cholesterol that are affordable, and in plain sight at your local grocery store. These are not the only ones, maybe not even the best ones, but nevertheless studies show that all ten will in fact lower your cholesterol.

*Cranberry juice: Cranberry juice is high in antioxidant properties and recent research suggest it can raise good cholesterol levels.

*Grape juice: Dark colored grape juice contains resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant which has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and protect the lining of the arteries. Make sure the sugar content of the product you choose is reasonable.

*Buttery spreads containing stanols and sterols: Stanols and sterols are plant extracts that block cholesterol absorption in the intestines, thus lowering bad cholesterol by as much as 10 percent.

*Soy milk with stanols and sterols: One study showed that soy milk lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol while reducing ones risk for type 2 diabetes. Throw in the stanols and sterols and you have a winner.

*Oat meal: At least at my grocery store oat meal on the bottom shelf and could be easily passed by, but if you are looking for natural products to lower cholesterol look no further than oatmeal. It is very high in cholesterol fighting soluble fiber, as well as being affordable. Oat bran is also a good choice if oatmeal is not to your liking.

*Flax bread: Flax bread contains three elements that are good for your heart; fiber, phytochemicals called lignans, and ALA, an omega 3 fatty acid found in plants.

*Mixed nuts: Mixed nuts containing almonds and walnuts are high in cholesterol busting plant sterols, fiber and heart healthy fats. They have been shown to help lower bad cholesterol and reduce the probability of acquiring diabetes. On the downside they are high in calories so use in moderation.

*Canned sardines: Canned sardines are one of those cold water fatty fish you have heard so much about. Substituting sardines for high fat snacks is a good plan. If you decide to implement this strategy be sure and bring along the breath mints!

*Olive oil: This is one of the better natural products to lower cholesterol on our list. Olive oil is high antioxidant polyphenols, and well monounsaturated fats. Studies show olive oil lowers troublesome LDL, keeps healthy HDL levels stable, and protects the blood vessels.

*Mustard: Mustard has been around for thousands of years and even today is one of the tastiest and most affordable condiments. Substituting mustard in recipes and for mayonnaise on sandwiches is a smart cholesterol lowering choice.

In summary, this list provides you with a great starting point to make your own list of natural products to lower cholesterol. Additionally, many people are finding that by combining heart healthy foods with natural cholesterol reducing remedies they have been able to achieve even better results.

You May Think Twice Before Having Your Defibrillator Removed

When the defibrillator that you had implanted to maintain a healthy heart is recalled, there are many decisions that you may have to wrestle with as reports of injured defibrillator patients roll in. In October 2007, a large manufacturer of defibrillators and pacemakers, Medtronic, recalled several units after it was discovered that the leads used in the devices may become defective over time. The defect caused patients to experience painful shocks in their chest, forcing many of them to be hospitalized for their injuries.

If you have been implanted with a Medtronic defibrillator, you may be struggling with the decision whether or not to have the device removed. While the FDA and Medtronic do not recommend the removal of defibrillators that do not show signs of the defect, the situation causes Medtronic patients a great deal of confusion and stress. No one wants to worry that the device that was implanted in order to save their life could end up being the device that leads to their death. Those who currently have implanted devices that have not shown defective tendencies have two choices: wait until the device harms them to have it removed and take the chance that the defect will not lead to their death, or face the serious dangers of having the functioning device removed.

The argument against removal states that the removal process is very dangerous. Studies show that between 2% and 7% of all surgeries involving defibrillators result in death. The removal process becomes complicated due to the growth of body tissue around the device over time. The FDA and Medtronic recommend that you do not have your defibrillator removed unless you have begun to experience the effects of a defect. Medtronic reports that of the 268,000 devices implanted before the defect was discovered, 2.3% of patients have experienced the painful shocks associated with the recalled devices.

The argument for having the device removed before symptoms occur is surrounded by concerns that the painful shocks associated with the defect could be avoided by removal. Many people do not feel comfortable living with the knowledge that their defibrillator may become defective at any time. If you are concerned about your defibrillator, speak with a doctor for appropriate medical advice. Choosing whether or not to remove your defibrillator is a difficult choice and can only be made by each individual patient.

If you have experienced the painful effects of a defective defibrillator, contact an experienced lawyer immediately. Expensive medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and many more damages may have occurred as a result of your defective defibrillator. There is no need to suffer financially, physically, or even emotionally if the damages you have experienced were caused by a negligent manufacturer.

No-Scar Heart Surgery Has Great Results and the Fastest Recovery - See What Your Best Options Are

When you are told you need open heart surgery a sudden rush of fear is often the first reaction. Gruesome images of huge scars, bleeding, unbearable pain and overwhelming fear of terrible complications come to mind in a whirlwind blur. All these images in your mind are very far from reality and reflect the way heart surgery was performed OVER FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. I hope this article will help you appreciate the giant leap forward our specialty has made to devise a soft touch, low impact surgical technology to allow our patients a rapid and uneventful return to their life style after a coronary bypass or a heart valve operation. I will give you a brief outline of the hospital course for a minimally invasive heart operation to help you see the difference between your fears and what actually happens when you are in the hospital.

My example will be the all too common case of a 75 year old lady who needs a mitral valve repair to correct her severe mitral valve leakage. Here we go:

All the testing before surgery is done as an outpatient to give you time to discuss every detail about your state of health and your heart condition.
The day of surgery you arrive at the hospital early in the morning and meet again with your surgeon. A small intravenous line is inserted in your arm. It feels like a pinch.
Once you are in the operating room you'll be given some anesthesia right away and you'll fall asleep. The rest of the time you will not see, feel, hear or remember anything until you wake up in our recovery area after surgery.
The only person who's really suffering during surgery is your relative or friend sitting in the surgical waiting room.
The operation is carried out through a tiny incision in the skin crease under the right breast. There is no bone cutting involved because the opening is in the space between two ribs. This is important because bones don't heal well in many female patients because of osteoporosis (brittle bones) after menopause
Before closing the surgical incision a local anesthetic is injected in the space between the ribs to make that portion of the chest wall completely numb
You are then transported to our intensive care unit and you'll wake up feeling groggy but pain free
By the morning after you'll be out of bed and walking and maybe hungry enough for a small meal. You are ready to be transferred to the regular floor to continue walking and deep breathing exercises with our nurses and physical therapists
The second day after surgery most paytients are ready to go home with arrangements for a visiting nurse and physical therapy service and the surgeon's phone number
You are encouraged to resume your physical activity right away, including going out for a stroll, going up and down stairs and receiving friends and relatives at home.
Two weeks later you'll be back at the surgeon's office for your postoperative visit and by that time you'll have my blessing to resume your life style in full, including driving, traveling, going back to work

Again, this is what you should picture in your mind when you are told you need an operation. Ask your doctors about minimally invasive heart surgery techniques that do not involve bone cutting and are carried out through tiny incisions. If they are not familiar with them, consider consulting a Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery Center for a second opinion. More and more patients are gladly traveling out of town to get the best care available and they are glad they did. It's your body, it's your heart, it's the rest of your life!

The Great Benefits of Omega 3

As we age, we all seem to become prone to High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and the beginnings of Cardiovascular Diseases. I believe that we do not eat the proper foods that we need to keep our bodies healthy and that we probably do not exercise enough. There are some things that we can do to help keep our bodies healthier.

The first thing we need to do is make ourselves go for a long walk, maybe two walks, every day. The second thing we need to do is watch our calorie intake, and the third thing we need to do is start taking supplements, that will assist our body to stay healthy.

Omega 3 is one of the supplements that, I personally, really believe in.

Their is scientific evidence accumulated from many studies, that support the taking of Omega 3 supplements. It helps to reduce the risk of death, heart attacks, dangerous abnormal heart rhythems, high blood pressure and strokes in people with known cardiovascular disease. It also slows the buildup of plaque in arteries.

I personally really believe in Omega 3's ability to reduce plaque. In Feb. a few years ago, I went to see a chiropractor, as I was having trouble with my back. He took xrays and then brought them in to show me. He said to me "Do you see this long slender bone in your lower back? That is not a bone. That is your artery. Your arteries are so filled with plaque, that they appear to be bone." He strongly recommended Omega 3 supplements. In August, of that same year I visited a Medical Doctor for another problem and I was shocked to discover that my arteries were clear and that my cholesterol was fine. That made me a real believer in Omaga 3.

It is fine, and recommended, to have a healthy diet, and that includes at least a couple of servings a week of omega 3 enriched foods. But I find that I just don't do it. Maybe it is because I live in the Midwest, and we just did not eat fish often. So I faithfully take my Omega 3 supplements every day. The side benefit for me, that I have not seen in the studies done on Omega 3, is that my always extremely dry skin is no longer extremely dry. For me, that is a very valuable benefit.

Here is to healthy living!

A Normal Cholesterol Range and How to Achieve it Naturally

Understanding what a normal cholesterol range is can be confusing and it is only a general guideline as we are all different. However, it is good to try to stay within these ranges and here are some natural ways that can help you.

A normal cholesterol range should look like this.

Total Cholesterol: 200mg/dl

LDL: Less than 100mg/dl

HDL: At least 40mg/dl

Triglycerides: Less than 150mg/dl

As a guide, you are thought to be at risk from heart disease if your total levels exceed 240mg/dl, depending on how much HDL you have.

While LDL is regarded as the bad one as too much of it clogs up your arteries, HDL helps to remove excess LDL and transport it back to the liver.

A good ratio to maintain is 3:1 or 2:1 LDL to HDL as a guide. So it is important to ensure you get both these levels in your test results and to not just focus on your overall cholesterol levels.

The other level to get is your triglyceride one as these are also fats related to cholesterol and need to be checked regularly too.

If you are over thirty, it is recommended that you get a test done every five years to monitor it properly.

There are many things you can do to bring your levels back within the normal cholesterol range. Exercising for 30 minutes a day helps to lower LDL and raise HDL.

Trying to eat less saturated fat like fried food, butter, margarine and pastries while increasing the amount of fruit, veggies, wholegrains and oatmeal will also help.

Fatty fish like salmon and tuna are one of the best natural substances for lowering your triglyceride fats as well as lowering the LDL cholesterol. A daily fish oil supplement is the best route due to the toxins fresh fish contain today.

A natural cholesterol supplement can also have a significant impact as 80% of your cholesterol comes from your liver. These help to lower to production of LDL, dissolve particles in the blood and reduce absorption into the gut to keep you healthy.

If you follow these tips they will help you keep within the normal cholesterol range and lower your risk of heart disease and a stroke.

If you would like to learn more about the high quality cholesterol balancing supplements I personally take, visit my website below.

What Are the Different Kinds of Heart Disease?

Atherosclerosis is one cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerosis occurs when artery walls thicken, because of fatty tissue and cholesterol build up, which then prevents them from expanding and contracting in the normal way. This stops the blood flowing freely to the heart, starving it of oxygen and if an artery blockage does happen, a heart attack may occur. Coronary heart disease is a narrowing of the inbound arteries, where angina is a major symptom. Although many people do not experience any symptoms until they eat a large meal, take exercise or even get excited. Then the heart requires more oxygen (increased blood supply) to cope with the demands of this increase in activity. This is also known as coronary artery disease.

When this happens, angina may come on suddenly and result in neck pains, discomfort down the arms and more likely in the chest. Angina can be treated with immediate rest and medication. Another condition is Arrhythmia. Most arrhythmias from the top part of the heart are nothing to be concerned about, however ventricular arrhythmias can be life threatening.

Types of Arrhythmias: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is when fast irregular electrical impulses start from many points in the ventricles, causing trembling and abnormal beating. If this problem is not treated quickly, it can lead to cardiac arrest, if not a fatality. Atrial fibrillation (AF) happens when impulses in the atria are abnormal and over ride the heart's normal rhythm causing it to fibrillate or contract erratically. If not treated, atrial fibrillation can lead to a blood clot forming, causing a stroke if it passes to the brain. Another condition, supraventricular tachycardia or SVT is caused with increased electrical corridors between the heart ventricles and the atria, allowing a short-circuit which circles back to the atria. Ventricular tachycardia or VT is when an amount of blood is pumped quicker than normal, caused from increased ventricular impulses which can lead to them not having enough time to fill the heart properly with blood before pumping. This can lead to ventricular fibrillation.

Other types of heart disease: Another type is congestive heart failure. This is defined as when the bodies requirements for oxygen rich blood are not met, because the heart is not pumping properly. It is caused from weakening of the muscle tissue, stiffening of the heart muscles or other diseases causing the body to require more oxygen. High blood pressure or hypertension can increase the chances of developing further problems. It is important to get your blood pressure checked regularly if you are middle aged or older because usually you will display no symptoms of ill health. Another kind is heart valve disease or endocarditis. As the name suggests, this is when one or more of the valves are not working efficiently, which prevents normal blood flow through the heart. This can over burden it causing shortness of breath, although treatment is available. Cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease of the heart. There are four main types, hypertrophic, dilated, restrictive and arrhythmogenic.

Paramedic Training

Paramedics are trained to deliver advanced medical assistance to patients in emergency situations, and you can get good paramedic training from vocational schools and trade schools. Professional emergency medical technicians (EMTs) need good training in paramedic procedures to save and preserve the lives of trauma victims, accident victims, and those stricken with a sudden and acute illness.

Paramedic schools are designed to provide both beginning and advanced EMTs with the most comprehensive training for paramedic technicians, including making preliminary diagnoses, administering fluids and drugs intravenously, applying manual defibrillators, and inserting emergency tracheal tubes as required. Across the US and Canada, training is offered in regulated progressive sequences, i.e., EMT-1 (basic), EMT-2 and EMT-3 (intermediate), and EMT-4 (Paramedic). All EMT students must learn to administer medical services in emergencies by communicating with doctors over the radio, and relaying accurate medical information to hospitals while transporting patients in ambulances.

Emergency medical technician training combines classroom with emergency and ambulance experience for a thorough understanding of basic life support and general health care, pediatric life support, measures that prevent the spread of diseases and vulnerability to violent or mentally unstable patients, and even defensive driving. Paramedic training at the EMT-4 level will also include specialized classes in pharmacology, cardiology, and EMT management.

Each state has its own regulations for professional paramedics, and all states require emergency technicians to obtain certification and to attend continuing medical education courses periodically. Employment is generally found with private ambulance services, in fire and police departments, and in hospitals. EMTschools will often assist in placement following graduation.

Most paramedics find their jobs to be challenging, interesting, and exciting; though working hours can be irregular and long. Expected salaries vary by location, amount of training, and the specific employing organization. Entry-level incomes begin around $25,000 annually.

To find out more about Paramedic Training and Emergency Medical Technician Schools, contact a few schools on our website today and make an informed decision.

How Do You Lower Triglycerides With Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids?

The benefits of omega 3 essential fatty acids, primarily DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), are well known, and in particular the heart benefits of omega 3 fats. However for people with high triglycerides there is another reason to increase the amount of omega 3 fats in a diet to lower triglycerides.

Research shows that over 90 percent of us are deficient in the important essential fatty acids found in fish oil. And research has also confirmed a wide range of heart benefits from remedying that deficiency by including more fish, or fish oil in the form of supplements, in our diet.

Some of the heart benefits of increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids include a reduction in the risk of arrhythmia, which can lead to fatal heart attack, a reduction in blood pressure and a decrease in the growth rate of plaque in the arteries. But for our purposes today the research also show a decrease in triglycerides levels.

Triglycerides are a form of fat that can be manufactured in the body from the food you eat and exist in the blood. Having high triglycerides increases the risk of blood clots and can also lead to a lowering of your HDL (good) cholesterol. Basically high triglycerides are linked to coronary artery disease. And high triglycerides can also be a risk factor in some other diseases, for example diabetes.

A diet high in fats and in particular in saturated fat can contribute to high triglyceride levels as can high sugar foods. Being overweight and drinking too much alcohol can also contribute.

So it would seem clear that lowering triglycerides, if you have a problem with a higher than normal triglyceride level, is a good thing.

There are a range of things that you can do to lower triglycerides if you have a problem, including reducing the amount of fatty foods and in particular foods was saturated fats, eating less sugar and exercising more. Also important is reducing alcohol intake and try to lose weight if you are overweight.

However research is now showing that increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil is also important in a strategy to lower triglycerides.

For example a statement published on the website of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concludes that "omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil decreased serum triglyceride concentrations by 25% to 30%" and "A dose-response relationship exists between omega-3 fatty acid intake and triglyceride lowering".

The role of an increase in intake of omega3 essential fatty acids is sufficiently established so that the American Heart Association specifically recommends that patients who need to lower triglycerides take 2 to 4 grams of DHA and EPA every day, as fish oil supplements, under a physicians care.

Many people in our society suffer from higher than recommended triglyceride levels. This then is good news for them, providing them with another weapon in the arsenal to help lower triglycerides.

And there is also powerful evidence of a wide range of other health benefits from increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids, and for these reasons everyone, including people with high triglycerides, should seek to maintain a minimum level of fish oil in the diet.

This is difficult simply by eating fish because fish is contaminated with mercury and is expensive. However there are excellent fish oil supplements available which are not contaminated and which are much more cost-effective to be taken daily. But not all supplements are as good as others.

Visit my website to find out how to compare the various fish oil supplements available, (and which ones I take myself).

How to Use Health Care in Australia

Australia is both an island and a continent, with nearly eight million kilometers of land area. Conversely, the country has a relatively small population concentrated mainly in the urbanized areas of the country. There is currently a strong push for skilled and sponsored migration to the country to sustain its population and assist in the full recovery of the Australian economy from the ravages of the recession.

The system of healthcare in Australia is not only focused on the physical and mental health of its populace but also the overall social well-being of the individual. The system is a homogeny of both public and private health service providers. The public system of healthcare in Australia is called Medicare and is funded in part by a tax levy of 1.5% for middle income earners and 2.5% for high income earners.

The Commonwealth of Australia determines the national health policies, regulation and funding. The States and Territories govern the system with execution, oversight and regulation of both the public health services as well as private health care providers. The system of healthcare in Australia has pre-determined strategies which include provision of clinical services and programs, improvement of the holistic individual, reduction of risk factors, capacity creation for individual health choices and attunement of services for cultural well-being.

The National Subsidy Scheme is called the Medicare as it subsidizes services and prescription medicines brought from drugstores. The system also provides free treatment in the many public hospitals in the country. Medicare also provides free or subsidized payments to medical practitioners for specialized services. There are many ways to avail of the Medicare benefits. The first way is by reimbursement after full payment. Another way is by requesting advance payment be issued to the medical specialist for a scheduled procedure or check up. Another way is by the doctor deducting the cost of the service from the subsidy provided by Medicare foe their services. Finally, the doctor or the patient can claim directly from Medicare.

Another aspect of the system of healthcare in Australia is the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Here, the government provides high subsidies for the prescription medication available in the market. This is available for all Australian residents and tourists from countries which have Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with Australia. The Australian government also provides subsidies for the cost of prescriptions allowing for a further lowering of costs of treatment for Australian citizens.

Another aspect of health care funding is covered by private health insurance. This aspect of the system of healthcare in Australia allows coverage to be availed of in either public or private health institutions. These insurance providers also allows the patient a wider choice as to options for doctors and hospitals for their medical needs. Also, some procedures not covered in the public coverage is included in the private insurance coverage which includes therapies in optical, physiotherapy, podiatry and dental services.

The overall quality of healthcare in Australia is amongst the best in the world. This has made the country a haven for tourists and immigrants and as observed by the Expat Forum, "Since special medical treatments are lower in Australia than in other developed countries, many patients go to Australia for treatment and other medical services." This has made Australia a utopia for many.

Five Common Things to Look For When Choosing a New Physician Or Dentist

When Jill made the move to Illinois she was well aware that she would have to start all over again in her new location and that would entail locating a new physician and a Chicago dentist as well as a piano teacher for the kids. She was able to find a doctor and a piano teacher without too much trouble but it took a while before she found an Evanston dentist that she felt would be a good fit for her entire family. The qualities she was looking for consisted of:

• Friendly demeanor - A warm and friendly demeanor and personality are very important to most people especially when they have young children who are going to the doctor or simply having their annual checkup and teeth cleaning. A professional who knows how to relate to people is in high demand and usually has a very loyal following.

• Good front office - The person who answers the phone when you call to schedule an appointment is an important link to the office itself. In times of distress, like when you have broken a tooth or you have a tremendous toothache, it means a lot to have someone who is kind and sympathetic. It is also very reassuring to trust that this person will be sure to get you in as soon as possible to ease your suffering.

• Comfortable and clean waiting room - This is an important aspect because it gives a glimpse into how all of the office areas are taken care of. Many people pass through the doors and some of them are unwell so it is vital that the medical waiting rooms and offices are thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis. It is also a good idea if the waiting rooms are furnished with comfortable furniture with plenty of good lighting and current magazines available for patients to read while they are waiting their turn to be seen.

• Updated equipment - A well furnished examination room is an indication that most likely the person you have chosen to take care of either your physical wellbeing or your teeth has kept up with the latest technology available and has invested in the proper tools to do so. Many times it can save you an unnecessary trip to a specialist if your family care professional has the proper equipment at hand for minor problems.

• Reasonable rates - It is very important that any professional that you use for medical reasons is someone who will accept your current insurance coverage. Even if this is the case, there will always be charges that insurance will not cover and you will have to pay out of pocket for them. Therefore, it is wise to be sure that those charges are reasonable and not extravagant or outrageously high. Many offices will work with you on a payment plan when you have to have extensive work done such as a crown or an implant and this is very helpful. Remember, it never hurts to ask for a payment plan but it will not usually be offered if you do not request it.

Enhancing Knowledge About Medical Conferences

The developments in the medical community have been revered and rightfully so, for their achievements that have made mankind combat the diseases up to a certain degree and identifying the root causes of the same, in order to prevent them from occurring. One of the most potential tools of exchanging information for the medical community is the medical conferences. This is a channel for those belonging to the various fields of health sciences to get together and discuss their progress and scope of works.

With new people shedding light on the old topics and brain storming about the upcoming threats to the health of the human race, many new ideas are developed and the foundation of acquiring new skill resource pools is laid. Moreover, it allows the professionals from a particular field to enhance their practice and researches.

For those health professionals who want to be a part of the medical conferences, it is important for them to bear in mind the reason for participating in such conferences. It is important to go through the brochures and the schedules of the other key participants of the conference and note them. Another important tool that one should be equipped with at all times is their business cards, which they can get printed in the official language of the host country in case the medical conferences are being held abroad. This would prove to be a beneficial move when networking with the other professionals.

When participating in the medical conferences it is important to keep a professional image and appreciate new ideas and opinions. Even if one does not agree to the ideas proposed by the other, it should not be criticized; rather, helpful suggestions should be forwarded in a positive manner. A medical conference is a medium that allows the participants to get to know an array of approaches, techniques, researches and much more. The medical conferences are a great source for the professionals of this industry to boost their knowledge and enhance their education in their respective fields. These types of conferences are a crucial way of learning about the healthcare legislation, as well, which at times tends to get ignored by the professionals of this industry.

Medical conferences are also a way of recruiting the accomplished professionals representing different medical institutes, who may be willing to take up the offered opportunities provided. One can use this channel for hiring the managerial and the professional staff of their institutes as it is a great way to gauge their skills, acumen and knowledge regarding their respective field. In order to attain the best results from the medical conferences it is important to keep these aspects in mind and then proceed with the schedule of the events.
